Maio: Let’s handle
some capital needs

By ROBERT D. KEOHAN
WAKEFIELD — The town's financial situation appears to be going in the right direction so Town Administrator Stephen Maio told the Finance Committee last night he will recommend an increase in capital funding from $1 million to $1.5 million in the fiscal year beginning July 1.
One of the key reasons for the improved economic status is the radical change in insurance costs. A year ago combined insurance costs to the town soared by $1.7 million. This year, even including coverage for town retirees, the rates from the GIC have lowered town insurance costs for the coming FY’13 year by approximately $2 million.
Citing the many utility cuts the Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department makes on town streets, Maio hopes to get the current $800,000 amount the MGLD delivers up to $1,050,000.
