3-alarm fire hits Water St. home
State Fire Marshal called in to help determine cause
By GAIL LOWE
WAKEFIELD — The state Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to help investigate the cause of a three alarm fire that broke out at an historic two-family home on Water Street last night, bringing apparatus from six communities to join Wakefield in battling the blaze.
Last night shortly after 9, the fire broke out in the rear apartment of the 200-year-old two-family home at 472 Water St., causing heavy damage. Fire Chief Michael Sullivan placed the value of damage at approximately $300,000.
No one was home at the time of the three-alarm fire and its origin is being investigated by officials from the state Fire Marshal’s office. The owner, James Allen, has lived in the home for 40 years and said it was named the Wiley Home because it was formerly owned by the family for which Wiley Place is named.
A 911 call placed by Allen’s neighbor came into the fire station at 9:12 p.m., and after firefighters arrived on the scene, Captain Joseph Riley sounded a second alarm minutes later. Mutual aid came from Stoneham, Reading, North Reading with engine and ladder trucks. Fire Chief Sullivan sounded a third alarm at 9:45 p.m., bringing an engine and ladder truck from Lynnfield and Melrose to the scene. Also responding was an engine from Saugus.
